From the view of early art of painting, the difference between Eastern and Western expression techniques is that the former put emphasis on spiritual elements, using lines and ink wash to create the metaphorical beauty of painting, while the latter uses color and proportion in a more strict, formulaic manner. In contemporary artworks, artists capture elements and expressions from the spirit of traditional Chinese culture, and in combination with Western medium and techniques, they bridge the gap of thoughts between Eastern and Western arts and create artworks that are the products of its times.

In the hope of gathering artworks that display the fusion of Eastern spirit and Western techniques, Cathay United Art Center inviteed An-li Dai, Mei-hua Ji & Yi-ying Qui to hold a group exhibition and chose “The New Oriental World” as the theme. Among these three artists, An-li Dai, who has lived in New York for 12 years, is extremely sensitive to color. She is an expert in using layers of color to create spatial perception. From artworks displayed in this exhibition, you can see images constructed at the center of the canvas using square shapes combined with landscape, while the outer area uses bright colors to create different levels of space. Come experience this visual feast yourself!

An-li Dai’s oil paintings exhibition, “Flourishing Cities, Taipei - New York” is currently being held at the art gallery at Land Bank of Taiwan’s head office.

Yao-xing Wang (chairman of Land Bank), Le-ming Su (general manager of Land Bank), Tian-shang Fan (chief secretary of Land Bank), Ming-zhe Chen (secretariat director of Land Bank) and An-li Dai were all present for a photo at the opening of the exhibition.

According to Land Bank, An-li Dai has master degrees in fine arts and science from the City University of New York. She’s now a full-time associate professor of arts instruction at National Taiwan University of Arts. Since childhood, she has displayed outstanding talent in painting amongst learners of the same age. After graduation from senior high school, she entered the Department of Western Painting at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now known as National Taiwan University of Arts) and majored in oil painting. At that time, Mei-shu Lee was Head of the Department, and Ji-chun Liao (oil painting), San-lang Yang (oil painting), Rui-lin Hong (oil painting), Ze-fan Lee (water painting) as well as Jing-rong Chen (sketching) were also part of the faculty. Being able to learn from these senior artists, a solid foundation was laid down for An-li’s sketching and painting skills.

“Artistic creation is a sensual way to express the combination of the external feelings and the inner world. It reveals all these emotions in a single piece, not as a result of fleeting emotion, but as the accumulation of deep feelings from life and experiences.” says An-li Dai.

Impressionists in 19th century analysis color rationally. They emphasized accurate depiction of light with its changing qualities, creating effects that are natural and spaces that are full of depth while painting landscapes. An-li Dai absorbs the impressionist way of dealing with pictorial space, but she emphasizes the coordination and softness of colors, showing exquisite gentility. Being tech-savvy and a sensual person, An-li Dai is able to shines in both the traditional arts and the electronic arts field.
